First Week Update - Sept 11

Dear Henry Munro families,

We are very much looking forward to welcoming our Lions back to school next week. It has been a long time away and we are all adjusting to the new realities of COVID-19. We understand that you probably have a lot of questions about what back to school will look like but rest assured that our staff has been busily working on ensuring a safe start to the 2020-2021 academic year.

A reminder that school will restart with a staggered entry beginning on Tuesday, September 15th. Please make sure that you are sending your child to school on the correct day:

  • Grade 6 students and students in specialized program classes (BIP and ELD) start September 15th;
  • Grade 7 students start on September 16th; and
  • Grade 8 students start on September 17th.

It is essential that students arrive safely and practise social distancing at all times. Please take some time to discuss with your child the importance of wearing a mask, sanitizing their hands and social distancing. We must all work at this together to ensure everyone is safe.

Arrival and Dismissal:

For students who will be dropped off or will be walking, consider determining a drop-off/meet-up point that is at a reasonable distance from the school. Please see the walk-a-block map map for ideas. Our school entrance will be reserved for student buses and vans and staff vehicles only. We expect a high volume of traffic around the school and are asking for patience from everyone. The health and safety of all of our community members is of utmost importance.

Similarly, at the end of the school day, parents are strongly encouraged to park and wait for students at a reasonable distance from school property. Students walking a block or two for parent pick-up will help maintain our social distancing goals and avoid congestion at the entrance of our school.

For students who take the bus, you can verify the bus information using the parent portal at the following website:

Students are encouraged to arrive at their bus stop 10 minutes early.

When students arrive at school, they will be directed to go line up at their designated homeroom area in the school yard. This will be marked with an orange pylon with a class sign that indicates their homeroom name (ie. “EF6A”). We have been making calls to families all week in order to provide you with the homeroom information for your child. It would be helpful if you would remind your child of their classroom name and homeroom teacher’s name. This will facilitate students getting to the right place as quickly as possible. If for some reason you did not receive a call this week, or your child doesn’t remember the information, we will ensure that they find their teacher and classmates before they enter the building. There will be two tables, one in the front and one in the back of the building, for students who are unsure of their homeroom. All staff will be wearing orange vests and will be ready to help students find their designated area. We are asking adults that are dropping off students at Henry Munro not to enter school property so that we can minimize the number of people in our school yard at arrival and dismissal.

New protocols for this year:

Prior to coming to school, all staff and students are required to complete the COVID-19 self-assessment. All staff and students will be required to wear a mask while at school. During nutritional breaks, students can place their mask in a ziploc bag, which we will provide for them. During recess, masks are optional and students may choose to wear them if they wish. All staff will be wearing masks throughout the day, and some staff will also wear face shields. Hand sanitizing stations are in place at all entry and exit points and students will be required to sanitize their hands each time they enter and exit our building. Every student will be assigned one seat, one desk, one entry/exit door. They will also be instructed on the new school procedures over the course of the first days. We will be practicing together to ensure that every student has a full understanding of the expectations.

Student belongings:

Students are advised to only bring what is absolutely necessary to school. This includes:

  • A refillable water bottle
  • A litterless lunch (all wrappers, garbage, etc. must go home at the end of the day)
  • Appropriate clothing for learning (indoors/outdoors)
  • Some school supplies (see supply list)

If you wish to send your child to school with their own writing supplies, they are encouraged to do so in a labelled ziploc bag. Lockers will not be used at this time and students will not be changing for Physical Education so all items that are brought to school will be stored in the student’s learning area.

Lastly, we acknowledge that some of your calls and emails have not been returned yet, but we know that you can appreciate that we have been putting all of our efforts into ensuring a safe and successful start-up.

Thank you for your understanding and supporting Henry Munro school safety.
